The Bor Bor River on the east coast of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu is without doubt one of the prettiest coastal river systems on Santo. Island Time Kayaking offer two levels of jungle river adventure, a 3 hr Bor Bor River Experience, which takes in the top section of the river, and a 5 hr Epic Expedition which takes in almost the whole of the river system.
The Bor Bor River starts life as an underground river and surges out of a small limestone cave near the traditional village of Natawa. This is where each river adventure Espiritu Santo begins! The water is crystal clear (having been filtered by the limestone) and winds it way through village gardens, rainforest and dense tunnels of water lilies and native vines. This first section is easy paddling as the current simply pushes you along like a Disneyland ride.
Nenenit Lakes – River Adventure Espiritu Santo
The next section of the river widens out into a series of stunning freshwater lakes, called the Nenenit Lakes. Here there are magical bubble pools, fish feeding, deep underwater caves and lots of local birdlife. It’s the ideal spot for a refreshing swim as the water is cool and deep! A wonderful stopover on your river adventure Espiritu Santo. Keep an eye out for local village women harvesting the wild watercress growing along the side of the river and the lake.
Bushes Rapids – River Adventure Espiritu Santo
From the lake the river runs through tunnels of rainforest and palm plantations until it reaches the small but exciting “Bushes” rapids. The rapids are very shallow and empty out into a deep pool. Part of the fun is finding your way through these rapids without getting your kayak stuck on the smooth river rocks below! Eventually you reach an open grassy area nestled within fields of wild sugarcane. This is the exit point for the Experience tour. A picnic of fresh local fruits awaits guests for this tour back at Natawa Village which is a short 4WD away.
Epic Expedition – River Adventure Espiritu Santo
The lower half of the Bor Bor River is reserved for those who take on the Epic Expedition paddle. A good level of fitness and kayaking experience is required as this is a 8km paddle all up! There are no villages in this area and consequently there is lots of wildlife (birds, mudcrabs, freshwater prawns). The river meanders through stunningly beautiful bamboo forests, ancient mangrove forests and pockets of rainforest until it widens significantly and reaches a fork in the river. Here the Bor Bor River flows down into the sea at Turtle Bay. However, rather than follow the river to the ocean we turn right and paddle up the Nanda River towards famous Jackies Blue Hole and Thar Blue Hole.
Nanda River – River Adventure Espiritu Santo
The Nanda River system is an underground river system like the Bor Bor River. The crystal clear water flows out from Jackies Blue Hole creating a stunning blue river. The final paddle leg of the expedition tour follows the Nanda river up to a beautiful swimming hole complete with a small island. Here we swim in the cool refreshing waters and enjoy a fruit platter under a shady nakamal (traditional meeting hut) All up it takes around 3.5 -4 hrs to complete the paddle from beginning to end!
